Ecuador has over 2,000 km of coastline and just about all of it is surf worthy. With so much coastline in Ecuador, where should you make your next surf trip here? Well, it is all about picking the best spot. But, what really makes a great surf spot? Brake accessibility, wave quality, crowd, and access to a few different brakes.
Surfing in Ayampe
In terms of consistency, Ayampe is one of the most sensitive beaches in Ecuador. Unlike many beaches in Ecuador, it uniquely picks up both north and south swells and functions with both types of swells. This means Ayampe has surfable waves all year long, rather than being a “season only” beach.
Ayampe is a beach brake with at least 3 different peaks to surf. And the best part? Just about zero crowds, unless a group of 14 surfers is a crowd to you. When the surf is heavy, Ayampe tends to be a bit closed out, but not to worry my fellow surfer. There are 3 other point breaks and 3 other beach breaks to surf that are within 30 minutes north or south of Ayampe.
For the majority of the year, the waves are about 1-1.5 meters high, so it is definitely a wave you can surf and carve all day long. On big days, the waves top out at about 2 meters high. But what we really love about Ayampe is that it has waves for every level of surfer: learning, beginner, average, and pro. White water for the learner, small/soft waves for the beginner, the consistent 1.5 meter wave for the general surfer and, on great days, tubes and barrels for the pro.
